• Interacting with customers to determine source of equipment problems; performing diagnostic checks to locate source of malfunctions
• Using multimeters, circuit testers, oscilloscopes, logic probes, and other equipment to inspect and test electronic equipment, components, and assemblies
• Diagnosing and locating circuits, components, and equipment faults
• Reading and interpreting equipment manuals and drawings
• Adjusting, aligning, replacing, or repairing parts
• Maintaining records including work orders and test/maintenance reports
• Accessing and distributing product information electronically via e-mail, databases, and online

• Secondary school diploma with math, English, and science credits; electrical courses an asset
• Completion of 8,000-hour apprenticeship, including on-the-job and in-school training

• Employed by businesses; may advance to supervisory positions or open own shop
• Usually work 40 hours/week in comfortable indoor shop
• Employers include independent TV/stereo repair shops, retail operations, box chains, and self-employment

Apprentice wage increases with skill and experience. Fully qualified workers earn $14.00-$25.00 per hour. Some shops pay commission (40-60% of total labour cost) instead of salary.
