What does a Electrician (Signal Maintenance) (289F) do?

This position maintains, modifies, installs, troubleshoots and repairs city wide serial, Ethernet and wireless communication network for a signalized traffic control system, including modems, repeater sites, overhead and underground cable and communication cabinets.

Programs and repairs microprocessor controllers, communication devices and associated electronic equipment to attain required timings and traffic control by reading electrical drawings, interpreting readings and indicators using various test equipment such as meters, oscilloscopes, communication test equipment, personal computers, laptops, etc. Perform continuous preventative maintenance programs. Maintain applicable records and prepare reports.

Assembles and installs intersection hardware while working at heights of over 20 feet. Operates various sized trucks, trailers, boom lifting equipment, forklifts, concrete saws, generators, compressors, pumps, hand and power tools, and soldering apparatus.

  • What Preparation and Training Do You Need?

  • Completion of Grade 12 plus trade schooling as required for the completion of a Certificate of Qualification as Construction and Maintenance Electrician (309A).
  • Training in the operation, installation and maintenance of the Traffic Signal control devices.
  • Operating tools and equipment related to traffic signal maintenance.
  • Able to interpret blueprints, drawings, and operational manuals.
  • Able to work at elevated heights in various weather conditions.
  • Familiar with the Ontario Traffic Manual (OTM).
  • Possess advanced knowledge of electronics, and hydraulics.
  • Successfully complete aerial bucket evacuation training.
  • Capable of working without direct supervision
  • Possess advanced PLC and computer skills.

    Wage Rate

    Apprentice wage increases with skill and experience. Fully qualified workers earn an average of $33.37-$39.24 per hour.
