apprenticesearch.com: What training and preparation did you require for your trade?

CASEY: A willingness to explore different career options and participate in a high school coop program. I did an electrical coop program then got hired as an apprentice with the company I am presently with.  I also had to make sure that I was ready to work and had all the tools like a good resume and cover letter and new how to conduct myself at a job interview.

 

apprenticesearch.com: What are the most valuable skills that you have learned?

CASEY: How to problem solve and work in a team environment while being independent. I have learned how to communicate well with my co workers and peers as well as hard skills such as wiring a house.

 

apprenticesearch.com: What do you think you need to be a successful Electrician?

CASEY: You need to be able to think on your feet and be willing to listen to others. It is important to follow instructions especially in the electrical industry. You also need to be a quick learner and have a good memory to learn and remember all of the electrical codes.

 

apprenticesearch.com:  What do you feel is needed to make you successful in your trade?

CASEY: You need to have a willingness to learn as much as you can both on the job and later at trade school.  Even after you are qualified you must continue to learn as things are always changing.

 

apprenticesearch.com:  What do you think employers are looking for in an apprentice?

CASEY: They are looking for people with good attitudes, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. They want people who are conscientious, keep good time and have good habits.  They do not want know-it-alls or people who want to rush without being accurate.

 

apprenticesearch.com:  What advice would you offer to youth entering your trade as an apprentice?

CASEY: Make sure that it is really the job that you want to do by researching the job and understanding completely what it involves. If you get a chance take a coop program while you are in school or even consider a pre apprenticeship program where you can get some experience. When you are on the job listen closely to instruction and ask lots of questions

 

apprenticesearch.com: Are there any misconceptions about being an electrician apprentice?

CASEY: I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to become a good apprentice. I thought that it would be a lot harder than it really was.

 

apprenticesearch.com: What do you think is the employment outlook for your trade?

CASEY: Being an electrician is always dependent on the economy especially in Construction work. I think you should be certified in a couple of areas like construction and industrial so that you can go where the work is. If you are a good employee I do not think there will be any issues in finding good work.

CASEY: Be a good listener, take instruction well and don’t be a know it all and you will grow and succeed.
