What Does a Packaging Machine Mechanic Do?

Packaging Machine Mechanics generally set up packaging lines to accommodate various products, package dimensions and production volumes, and repair, adjust or maintain this equipment.

What Preparation and Training Do You Need?

In order to indenture as an apprentice, you must be at least 16 years of age or older in the province of Ontario and have completed Grade 12 or equivalent. High school courses in English, Math or Science would be helpful, and enrollment in cooperative education in this field would be an asset. Completion of this type of apprenticeship will take 8,000 hours and will include theory classes and experience on-the-job.

The use of automated technology, micro-processors and programmable controllers is ever-increasing. Most Packaging Machine Mechanics work full-time in a manufacturing environment. A Packaging Machine Mechanic may also take further education and training to become a technician, and work on developing or modifying designs with plant engineers.
