What Does an Elevating Device Mechanic Do?

An Elevating Device Mechanic may inspect, install, maintain, service and repair elevating devices. These devices can include passenger elevators, freight elevators, observation elevators, dumbwaiters, escalators, moving walkways, freight platforms, stage lifts and others.

What Preparation and Training Do You Need?

In order to register as an apprentice, you must be at least 16 years of age or older in the province of Ontario and have completed Grade 12 or equivalent. In Ontario, being an Elevating Device Mechanic is an unrestricted trade; completion of an Apprenticeship could take 4-5 years including 3 periods of in-class training (8 weeks each). Including classroom time and on-the-job experience, completion requires roughly 8000 hours of work.

As an apprentice you would start at a wage rate less than that of a journeyperson, but this rate increases gradually as you gain competency. A fully qualified Elevating Device Mechanic can earn an average of $20.00 per hour.
