What Does a Pool & Hot Tub/ Spa Installer Do?

Pool & Hot Tub/ Spa Installers (237T) plan, prepare the work site, and install all types of above-ground, on-ground and in-ground swimming pools, hot tub/ spa structures and surrounding deck in both commercial and residential areas.

Job Related Skills, Interests and Values

  • reading and interpreting work orders, technical drawings and blueprints in order to prepare a site plan
  • coordinating the work of the sub-trades by contacting and scheduling excavators, trucks, fencing crew, electricians, gas technicians, landscapers and concrete contractors
  • acquiring a good working knowledge of pool & spa structures, applicable Building & Zoning codes, Compulsory Trades Regulations, Municipal and Fencing By-Laws and Regulations as well as Licensing Codes and Regulations
  • using a variety of  power hand tools and other required equipment including levels, tape measures, shovels, drills, files, saw, picks, stakes, string, pencils and calculators
  • installing pools walls, coping, liners, bottom finish and re-circulating equipment as well as completing surrounding deck
  • inspecting and checking plumbing and re-circulating equipment to ensure systems function in line with manufacturer's specifications
  • keeping pace with production requirements
  • completing work documentation such as time sheets, work orders, invoices, warranty coverage and other information to company standards
  • communicating with customers, co-workers and sub-trades personnel

What Preparation and Training Do You Need?

In order to apprentice at this trade, you must be at least 16 years of age or older in the province of Ontario and have completed Grade 12 or equivalent. High school courses in English, Math or Science would be helpful, and enrollment in cooperative education in this field would be an asset. Completion of this type of apprenticeship will take 6,000 hours and will include theory classes and experience on-the-job. This is the minimum to be apprenticed in this trade under the (OCTAA) Ontario College of Trades Apprenticeship Act (2009). Please note that minimum entry requirements to this and other trades are currently under review by the Ontario College of Trades.
